Credit Unions of Rhode Island and
Special Olympics: A winning partnership

For 18 years, the Credit Unions of Rhode Island have partnered with Special Olympics Rhode Island to provide more than 2,800 Ocean Staters with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to take part in athletic competition. Special Olympics Rhode Island hosts more than 40 local, regional and statewide tournaments and competitions each year in 25 different sports.

The credit unions presented Special Olympics Rhode Island with a check for $85,000 in July 2015. This amount exceeded their fundraising goal for the year by $15,000 and brought the total amount raised for Special Olympics to more than $800,000.

The Credit Unions of Rhode Island conduct fundraising events for Special Olympics throughout the year and are one of its biggest year-round supporters. They also account for the largest number of volunteers at the Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games each June. Fifty to 60 credit union employees work the events, coordinate participants, cheer on the athletes, and assist with the medals and awards ceremony.
